Jack Williams Memorial Leadership Award

American Legion State Adjutant Jack Williams led the American Legion, Department of North Dakota, for 49 years prior to his death in 1967. His great love for the game of baseball was evident in his early efforts to establish American Legion Baseball as a youth citizenship-training program of The American Legion. Aware that proper adult leadership was an important ingredient of a successful program, Williams constantly encouraged qualified men to work in the program. To perpetuate Williams’ memory, The American Legion, Department of North Dakota, annually presents this award to the manager and coach of the National Championship Team as representatives of the adult leadership Williams stressed during his lifetime. Listed below are those adults who have received this award.

Les Beckham

Les Beckham In 1963, avid Enid American Legion baseball fan Les Beckham was asked if he would help build some dugouts at Phillips-Failing park.
The dugouts are still there and so is Beckham, who is the post’s long-time baseball chairman.
“They haven’t fallen yet,” said Beckham with a smile about the blocks he laid down for the dugouts used by both Enid Legion and visiting teams.
Beckham has stuck with the program for the same reason he came out in the first place - a love of baseball.
“I just love baseball and you can’t find any better baseball than American Legion baseball,” Beckham said.
