A class late, tonight you’ll reveal what your web site is going to be about. If you haven’t already been playing with your WordPress site, this could be your first exposure to the writing and editing interface. The steps for posting your About page are as follows:
- Log into your site, not the main class site.
- Go to the “Pages” tab under “Manage.” If you have a page called “About”, click on “Delete” in the far right column next to it. This assumes you haven’t already edited that page to write your About content.
- Click on the “Write” tab at the top of the admin interface. If you are not automatically taken there, click on “Write Page.” This is the interface for writing the description of what your site is going to be about.
- Write the description using these criteria:
- You can call your page anything you like, such as About, in the title and that will be the foundation for the slug.
- Describe what your site is going to be about using no fewer than three sentences.
- Use good grammar and express yourself clearly.
- Use the links at the top of the interface to format your text as necessary. Paragraph tags will automatically be added for each extra line between paragraphs.
- Once you’re satisfied with your description, click “Save and Continue Editing”. You can preview what you’ve written by clicking on the preview link that appears at the top. If you’re completely satisifed, then you can click publish and your page will be published on your site.
- After your page is published, click on the “Options” tag at the top of the Admin interface on the far right. and then go to the “Reading” link.
- Under “Front Page Displays,” choose “A Static Page” and then select the page you just published. This will make your description the front page of your site until you get a chance to add more content in the form of additional posts or pages.
Hopefully, this description will be the foundation of the site that you’ll build in this class this semester, but don’t be afraid to refine and change your message. One thing you should learn in this class is that web sites evolve for a variety of reasons, including potentially the fact that you changed your mind.
